Welcome Reception

To mark the start of Shetland Hamefarin 2010, Shetland Islands Council will host a special reception to welcome Hamfarers to Shetland.

Entertainment will be provided by some of Shetland’s finest young musicians and vocalists in the form of a specially created group ‘Laldy’ and dialect singers from Nesting, Sandwick and Cunningsburgh Schools.  Laldy, formed especially for this year’s Hamefarin, brings together 50 young musicians to celebrate traditional music and pay tribute to the late Dr Tom Anderson MBE.  Fiddles and accordions have fronted entertainment in Shetland for generations and traditional instrumental instructors Margaret Scollay, Peter Wood and Alan Gifford bring together some of Shetland’s best young musicians for this special occasion.  In addition, pupils from three local primary schools will come together to perform songs sung in Shetland dialect, under the instruction of Maria Barclay Miller.

The reception also includes a welcome speech by Convener Sandy Cluness, return address by a Hamefarer, blessing by Rev Jeremy Dare and the presentation of the Hamefarin Quilt.

Light refreshments will be available.

The reception is open to all.
